Bessie
& Beulah
There
has never been a show like the Bessie &
Beulah show! It is one hour of the most
raucous, fun interaction since Mama on the Carol
Burnett show. Bessie & Beulah have audiences
standing, singing, dancing, and howling at their
"stress-relievers", everything from movies to money
to mothers-in-law. These feisty, malapropping
ladies even have the chief executives of companies
up on stage doing a rap to Men in Black. The
startlingly ending, where Bessie & Beulah
transform themselves into the lovely Becky and
Katie, always generates delighted gasps of
surprise.
Becky
Baker
and
Katie Blackburn have been performing the
Bessie & Beulah show nationwide for the
past l6 years. They have shared the platform with
Barbara Bush, Paul Harvey and Dan Quayle in
Tennessee, performed for Boeing Corporation
engineers in Los Angeles, and taken their audience
though an "autobody experience" at the National
Auto Body Congress and Exposition in Dallas. They
performed a Christmas show for the surgeons at the
Palomar Medical Center, where doctors were so
enthralled they demanded the women come back for a
question-and-answer period. Other clients include
Chevrolet, Kaiser Permanente, Servicemaster,
Salvation Army, the San Diego District Attorney's
office, Teen Challenge, and Executive Women
International.
It
is a show that EVERYBODY loves. Dottie Walters
says, "These ladies are the funniest comedy show we
have seen in many a moon." The charm is that in
addition to being hilarious, these women work hard
doing their homework to customize and personalize
the show, getting names of audience members and
their background faux pas to include in the show,
along with slogans or inside jokes that the meeting
planner gives them. Recently they performed at a
three-day international event at the Crystal
Cathedral. In the middle of their last performance
they intercepted a "cell phone call" from Dr.
Robert Schuller, and got on his case for
interrupting them, telling him that this was THEIR
Hour of Power, not his. Brought the house down. At
the end of the event, the audience gave them a
rousing standing ovation.
Becky
and Katie have been best friends for 29 years, and
came up with the idea through their theater work
with Lamb's Players in San Diego and SAK Theatre,
performed at Renaissance Faires and Disney's Epcot
Center. In addition to the Bessie & Beulah
show, they do training seminars on laughter and
humor. They recently taped a TV pilot for another
project of theirs -- a nationally syndicated talk
show.
Audiences
love participating and laughing at themselves. The
result, according to Tricia Chase of Chase
Productions, is one of the most clever, funny shows
on the road. "I have never known of a female comedy
duo, let alone one with such a new and original
show," she says. "Your material is perfect for any
mixed crowd."
