    Kim Bangs
    Decent Proposals
A fun adventure through the eyes of a seasoned (okay, maybe sassy is a better word) acquisitions editor who has reviewed literally thousands of proposals. The wacky, the way out, the wonderful—the "why on earth do they -acquisition folk -make us do ALL that?" By workshops end, you will have an understanding of the power of a decent proposal, the knowledge to produce a decent proposal and a glimpse into the puzzling world of acquisitions…from the other side!

Terry Burns writes inspirational fiction and is an agent with Hartline Literary http://www.hartlineliterary.com. As a writer he has a series that began with Mysterious Ways from River Oak Publishing and the series bears that name. The second, Brothers Keeper came out Feb 1, 2006 and Shepherd's Son came out January 1, 2007. That gives him 22 books in print counting the NF and short story collections. Other fiction includes Trails of the Dime Novel, a trade paperback from Echelon Press and in audio from JBS Publishing. To Keep a Promise and, Don't I Know You? trade paperbacks from The Fiction Works are both scheduled for audiobooks this year. He has published over 200 articles and short stories, is in a short story collection from Coastal Villages Press entitled "Straight from the heart - stories of love and friendship," the second volume entitled "More stories of love and friendship", one entitled "Living by Faith" from Obidiah Press, in Heartwarming Christmas Stories from River Oak in November 2006 as was Cup of Comfort for Weddings, and he has a story in Soul Matters for Men from Thomas Nelson. Terry has published four nonfiction books, has a small book of cowboy poetry entitled Cowboys Don't Read Poetry. A popular speaker at workshops across the country, his available works as well as a daily blog can be found at www.terryburns.net.

Too Shy To Pitch and Promote?
Believe it or not, Terry is very shy and introverted, but has learned how to overcome it and present an exciting and fast-moving program. Lots of writers are drawn to writing because they have trouble expressing themselves verbally. Many consciously or unconsciously sabotage their own publishing efforts because they fear they will have to do these things if they are successful. Terry shows how to develop a public persona and hide behind it.

Caroline Coleman has degrees from Princeton University, Christ Church, Oxford University, and Columbia Law School. She clerked for a federal district judge and worked as a litigation associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell, before "retiring" from the practice of law to take care of her children and write fiction. She sold her first novel, LOVING SOREN, to Broadman & Holman after pitching it at the 2002 Glorieta conference. Writer’s Digest recently published two of her articles on writing fiction. She lives in New York City with her two children. She has been on faculty at Glorieta in 2005 and 2007.

    Weaving Faith Organically Into Fiction
The fastest way to turn off readers of our fiction is to start preaching at them. So how do we fulfill our calling to be Christ’s ambassadors in a creative way? We’ll look at some of the best Christian fiction over the ages to see how other people have woven Christianity organically into their stories, using it to inspire us to come up with some new techniques of our own.

Adam Colwell brings over 25 years writing and editing experience to his second year of service on Glorieta's faculty. He currently serves as Project Manager for The Presidential Prayer Team nationwide non-profit ministry. He ghostwrites PPT’s direct mail appeal letters, oversees its direct mail and electronic fund raising program, writes articles and related content for the Pray the Vote 2008 and Adopt Our Troops in Prayer eNewsletters, and writes other PPT marketing and promotional materials.
In the past year as a freelance writer and editor, Adam has written four appeal letters and hundreds of radio promotional spots for Family Life Communications and two appeal letters and other marketing materials for the Tucson Jazz Society. He has also written devotionals published by Light From The Word Devotional and The Upper Room Devotional, and teaching articles that have been published by In Touch Magazine and Vista Magazine. Last year at Glorieta, Adam taught a workshop and hosted roundtables on devotional writing. In May, Adam was a keynote speaker at the Southwest Christian Writers Conference in Colorado, where he taught workshops on appeal letters, fund raising packages, devotional writing and ghostwriting. He is also currently working on his first novel.

Writing with Appeal: The Anatomy of Effective Appeal Letter and Fund Raising Packages
So what is an “appeal” letter, anyway? Why do people respond to fund raising letters? Why are they still necessary? Those questions and more will be answered as we explore the anatomy of an effective fundraising letter, the advent of eAppeals, identify three keys to successful fundraising letters, and explore fund raising packages from strategy to segmentation. You'll come away with the information you need to begin writing your own fund raising letters and create packages that will generate strong donor response while not adversely impacting your non-profit's bottom line.

A Writer is Only as Good as His Word

So many thoughts are flying through your head, and you’re not even half way through the event…what now? In this mid-point session, we will discover the true value of a writer’s word. We’ll investigate the importance of the second half of the conference, your continuing interaction with writers and editors, and the critical element of dedication to commitment and follow-up. I promise this session will perk up the way you finish the race here at conference and the next twelve months. After all, a writer is only as good as his word!

We’ll discover some great publications that speak specifically to female audiences, and writing genres that welcome our point of view. Men, you’re welcome to join us, but watch out…you’re entering the estrogen-fueled, coffee-infused, chocoholic-confessing zone!

In 1994 Jeanette Hanscome finally took a few stories out of her desk drawer and began submitting work for publication. Her first submission became her first published piece—a personal experience story in a magazine for visually impaired teens. Being visually impaired since birth she had plenty of fodder to draw from when it came to living with low vision. On paper Jeanette is classified as legally blind but, thanks to parents who refused to treat her as disabled and many great teachers, people are often shocked to hear it.
Jeanette is now the author of two books in Focus on the Family’s Brio Girls fiction series, and Want More? Joy Book 3 in the Brio Devotional Series. She has written numerous articles, devotions and stories for publications aimed at teens and adults. She regularly contributes to Walk Thru the Bible’s Tapestry, Standard Publishing’s Encounter—the Magazine, Focus on the Family’s Focus on Your Child newsletters, Girls, God and the Good Life, and the popular Christian Author’s Network blog. In addition to writing, Jeanette speaks on a variety of topics, and teaches writing workshops. She lives in Reno, Nevada with her husband and two sons. The Hanscomes attend Sierra Bible Church where Jeanette sings and is known for having a book recommendation for every occasion.

Fiction Techniques to Jazz Up Your Non-Fiction
When Jesus wanted to get His point across He often told a relatable story. Imagine His ministry without those unforgettable parables. The Son of God recognized that people were often most moved, not by fiery preaching, statistics, and facts, but by true-to-life stories. As a fiction writer who has also written a non-fiction book, as well as numerous articles and devotions, I often find myself using fiction techniques in my non-fiction—opening with a personal illustration, enhancing articles with dialogue, and describing scenes with details in order to bring them to life. This workshop will help beginning to intermediate writers spice up their facts and issues, enhance topics that might otherwise come across as boring, avoid sounding "too preachy," turn anecdotes into vivid scenes, and see the power in "show don’t tell."

    Writing Around Life
Few authors have the luxury of devoting full-time to penning great books uninterrupted. We have kids, spouses, day jobs, activities and ministries. How do we balance it all? Should we wait until the kids to grow up before we respond to God’s call to write, or discipline ourselves to make the time for what we so desperately want to do? Speaking from my own experiences as a busy mom and author who also works and serves, I will offer practical tips for managing time, developing self-discipline, meeting writing goals, and even writing around little ones. Writers will leave equipped to balance both writing and real life.

She also volunteers with Blue Star Mothers (an organization of moms with children serving in the military) and the Veteran's History Project.
Her writing has been published in articles and numerous compilation books. "These days my primary focus is on writing and speaking about patriotism, parenting, and prayer. Pamela Sonnemoser
    Building a Writers Network

There are two networks that a writer cannot be without. First is their network of clients, the second is their network of resources.
This class will assist the writer in gathering a web or resources and maintaining relationships with them as well as approaching local editors and selling themselves as a writer – even when their portfolio is still sparse. By the end of this class attendees will have at least one link to their local media and the ability to form those oh-so-important networking relationships with editors and sources.
Interactive communication and online research will be applied to this class. Writers will be encouraged to bring their lap-top in order to get a jump start on the information contained in the instruction.
This class will need to be scheduled in a room with a good wi-fi connection. A Power Point presentation is available if AV equipment is provided.
