What kind of book works well for Christian broadcast publicity?

In general, the types of books we've found to work best with this type of publicity are non-fiction adult Christian living titles. Also, current events related topics work well, especially if the author has good credentials as an expert on the subject.

Some examples of recent books we've promoted successfully in these genres include:

  • How to Prosper in Business…Without Sacrificing Integrity
  • Take My Hand: Guiding Your Child through Grief
  • War on Terror: Unfolding Bible Prophecy

Things that don't work so well are:

  • fiction (with very few exceptions)
  • Bible studies
  • theology (though apologetics is usually OK)
  • deep spiritual growth
  • devotionals (unless a really unique hook)
  • children's (unless there's a strong holiday hook)
  • teen books
  • cookbooks
  • poetry
  • Chicken Soup-type compilations UNLESS the editor has enough of his/her own stories in it. (Interviewers don't want to talk to a third party.) The book should have a unique angle as well.
  • over-worn topics (e.g. prayer was a big topic for about 18 months, with MANY titles about it. Some interviewers finally said, "That's enough on prayer for a while!")
  • prophecy (unless you already have a "name" as a prophecy teacher)
  • a message written in first person as if from God
  • points of view that are too far in one direction or another... that is... too far down the "Charismatic" end of the spectrum, or too far "Fundamentalist." Christian radio likes to be solidly biblical, but otherwise middle-of-the-road!

You may ask, "What about a controversial topic?" Controversy can sometimes work very well for interviews. At the peak of "Harry Potter" mania in 2001, I promoted Harry Potter and the Bible very successfully. However, I remember a book years ago about the "holy laughter movement" that flopped in its interview campaign. Hardly anyone wanted to touch that one! So it probably depends on what the topic is and what the cultural "climate" is at the time. If you want to run your controversial topic by us, feel free. E-mail interviews@classervices.com.

Who runs CLASS Promotional Services?

Kim Garrison is the director of CLASS Promotional Services, an independent division of CLASServices, Inc. After earning her B.A. in Communications from a Christian college, she worked in Christian radio for five years, and was later employed by the Dale Carnegie organization in San Diego. Since 1993, Kim has worked with Marita Littauer and CLASS, promoting Christian authors and speakers. Today Kim runs CLASS Promotional Services, one of the few publicity companies specializing in promotions for the Christian marketplace. An Associate member of the National Religious Broadcasters, she is also a contributor to You Can Market Your Book by Carmen Leal (Write Now Publications, 2003). Kim is also a faculty member of the Glorieta Christian Writers Conference.

A Christian since the age of 12, Kim believes her work is her calling. "I count it an honor and a privilege to help Christian authors and speakers further the Gospel by sharing their messages with radio and TV audiences! I believe in the power of Christian broadcasting to change lives, and I'm thrilled to play a small role in that process." Kim lives with her husband, David, and their two teenagers in Oceanside, California. In her "spare" time, she leads a teen girls Bible study, and co-leads a couples book club with David.

What makes CLASS Promotional Services unique as a publicity firm?

CLASS Promotional Services, LLC is uniquely specialized as a Christian broadcast publicity service. That means several things:

  • Our distinct focus is Christian radio and television publicity.
  • We are committed to maintaining the best possible media list of Christian talk shows that actively schedule interview guests on a wide variety of topics. We spend hours each week updating our media list to keep it current.
  • We select all our projects very carefully to ensure that the authors and materials we promote are a good match for our media connections.
  • If we're not completely confident about taking on a project, we'll conduct a media survey to ascertain receptivity to the title/topic, and provide feedback to the prospective client, free of charge.
  • If we don't feel that a project is quite the right match for CLASS' services, we gladly provide a referral list for other publicity firms.
  • We see our work as a ministry as much as a business. We regularly pray that God will bring us the right clients, the right media opportunities for that client, and the right radio and TV audience at the time of each interview.

Based upon the above, we may ask you to send a copy of the book (or galleys if the book is yet to be released) for evaluation as a prospective interview project. If we mutually agree to proceed, there is a simple Service Agreement to be signed. Payment options are as follows:

1. Client may receive a 3% discount on the $2,700 fee if the full payment is received up front.

Check with your publisher about a co-op arrangement. They may be willing to split the billing 50/50. If not, they may at least be willing to provide all the promotional copies of the book at no charge. Ideally, we like to launch a campaign with about 150 books.

Publishers:
You can earn significant savings if you hire CLASS for multiple titles. For every title beyond the first, you save $100 off each (with a cap at the 6-title rate of $2,200 each). Therefore….

What Christian Communications Professionals say about CLASS:

" CLASS is phenomenal -- the absolute best publicity firm in America today! I've hired CLASS over and over for years and I never lose money with them. They always perform way above my highest expectations. I wholeheartedly recommend them to everyone! ...

"After completing a national book tour, we told our publisher that we wanted to continue promoting our book, but we needed help to find a great publicist. Our editor checked with others in the business and came up with three names, all considered to be terrific. Of the three, we asked CLASS Promotional Services to represent us and we have been thrilled with the choice. Kim Garrison has kept us busy with interviews, and the hosts of the shows she has arranged for us have been outstanding to work with. If you're looking for a great publicist, consider CLASS. We're glad we did!" ...
