"Every
Day is a
Gift..."
is
the axiom Lauren has adopted as her life's focus.
Through the combination of over thirty years of
marriage, the parenting of three boys and a variety
of loss experiences, she has come to treasure each
day and make it count.
Through
her speaking and writing, Lauren encourages people
with her heartfelt messages and practical
presentations. Drawing from over two decades of
experience as a parent and the successful launching
of three boys into adulthood, Lauren's
presentations on parenting offer young moms hope
and encouragement for making parenting decisions
while not losing what makes them unique individuals
or sacrificing their marriages.
Her
compassion for comforting those in crisis began
with the deaths of her two younger brothers, the
first coming when Lauren was just seven years old.
After marriage, Lauren's grandmother lived with the
family in her last days and Lauren has been there
through the cancer battles with several friends.
She is also on the steering committee and serves as
treasurer of the local chapter of The
Compassionate Friends. From this depth of
experience comes Lauren's book The Art of
Helping -- What to Say and Do when Someone is
Hurting (River Oak Publishing, 2003).
Her
message is one of awareness for what people need
when they are going through difficult times and how
you can meet some of those needs and be a part of
the healing process.

Holding
several clearly aged items in her hand,
Lauren Littauer Briggs asks her audience,
"What is the difference between these
items and similar ones you might find in
an antique store?"
Our
items have a story that connects them to
us while those in the antique store are
just pretty things. While they may have a
history, it is not your history. It is not
the item, but the story that makes it
special. In order to keep your history
alive, however, you need to tell the
story, otherwise your precious treasures
will end up in an antique store for
someone else to purchase.

Throughout
her years of parenting, Lauren has maintained her
interest in business. She has a home-based company
doing bookkeeping, graphic design and business
management consulting for a select group of
clients. She is a licensed Realtor and specializes
in the real estate needs of returning missionaries.
Lauren's professional interests are featured in the
chapter on turning your talents, hobbies and
interests into an enterprise in her sister Marita
Littauer's book You've Got What It
Takes. Now that her children are older,
Lauren also helps in her husband's retail business,
Collector Galleries, and has rejoined the teaching
team of the CLASSeminar.
Lauren
holds a degree in psychology. As the daughter of
nationally known speaker and author Florence
Littauer, she comes by her speaking and writing
talents naturally. Lauren and her family are active
in both church and community choral groups
including the annual Feast of Lights and
have performed in the community productions of "The
Music Man", "Fiddler on the Roof" and "My Fair
Lady". Each of their children is musically gifted.
Randy, Jr., is a professional saxophone player in
The Aquabats, a "parent friendly" rock
band, Jonathan graduated from UCLA in 2005 majoring
in music, and Bryan attended Chapman University
where he majored in vocal performance. Lauren's
husband Randy is a numismatist, philatelist and
deals in exonumia. He is the President and CEO of
the Collector Galleries, a seventy year old
business specializing in coins, stamps and
investments. The Briggs family resides in Redlands,
CA.

Compassion
in Action: "The Art of Helping" Puts Flesh
on Good Intentions
"This
is a book you'll want to read before you
need it-so that you will have ideas of
what you can do and how you can
respond-when you first hear the
news."
These
are the words author and speaker Lauren
Littauer Briggs wrote on September 10th,
2001, while working on her new book,
The Art of Helping (Cook
Communications / RiverOak Brand, April
2003). In light of the massive tragedy
that shook our nation the following day,
the statement proved to be as galvanizing
as it was prophetic. People were desperate
to help those in need, but most were not
emotionally equipped to do so.
The
Art of Helping touches a
felt
need we all experience -- wanting to help
a hurting person, but not always knowing
what to say or do. Both practical and
inspirational, this book combines sound
tips and suggestions, reference charts
summarizing what to say and do in
comforting situations, plus poignant
personal stories to create a complete
guidebook for anyone seeking guidance on
how to effectively help a hurting friend
or loved one in a time of
crisis.
"The
most important thing we can do for someone
who is going through a difficult time is
to let them know we care," says Briggs.
"We need to be there for them, spend time
with them and write them notes to let them
know that we are thinking about them,
praying for them and sharing their pain.
Realize that their hearts are full of pain
and turmoil. We need to be aggressive with
our willingness to help. Ask yourself,
'What would I need if I were in a similar
situation?'"
The
book is divided into four sections of
crisis issues to aid the compassionate
comforter:
Personal
Crisis: Divorce, Rebellious Child,
Elderly parents, Moving, Legal
Problems, Depression, Job Change or
Loss, Abuse or Violence
Health
Needs: Infertility, Hospital Stay,
Surgery, Chronic Illness, Child with
Critical Illness, Child with Special
Needs or Disabilities, Difficult
Decisions
Loss
of a: Pregnancy, Infant, Child,
Spouse, Parent, Family Member, Home,
Pet, Loss by Suicide
Continued
Support: Prayer, Gifts,
Recipes
Everyone
knows someone suffering from the crisis
issues listed above. The Art of
Helping is not only a guide book
for the comforter, but a challenge-will
you be a tangible expression of God's
comfort and love in someone's hour of
need? Once this book has equipped you with
specific guidelines for care, will you put
them into practice wherever you are right
now? There is an immediate need and an
eternal blessing in caring for the needs
of others. As Briggs states, "I believe
every day I wake up is a gift from God,
and that is why my motto is: Every day is
a gift! I claim Psalm 118:24 and recite,
'This is the day that the Lord hath made;
I will rejoice and be glad in it.'" So
come rejoice by ministering to the
specific needs of your friends, family,
and community and let The Art of
Helping transform your gifts into
His masterpiece.
"Lauren
taught me much about what helps us during difficult
and challenging times. I would have loved for all
my friends to have this book during my five years
fighting cancer. This book should be on everyone's
bookshelf for reference and to be shared with the
hurting." Emilie Barnes, "More Hours in My Day", "A Cup of
Hope"
"Some
people have the touch...the healing touch of
sensitivity, availability, and dependability. Lean
in and learn from one who does -- Lauren
Briggs." Patsy Clairmont, Women of Faith Speaker, "The
Shoe Book," "The Hat Book"
"I
have known Lauren Briggs since she was a young
girl, but the day I received a sympathy card from
her, I know this young girl has grown into an
extremely caring and sensitive woman. Lauren's book
provides common sense and sensitive ways we can
provide meaningful encouragement to those who need
our help when we don't know what to do." Marilyn Heavilin, "Roses in December,"
"December's Song,"Grief is a Family
Affair"
"One
of the strongest aspects of Lauren's presentation
was the practical and useful recommendations she
gave in regards to comforting those who are
grieving. Our event draws an audience of varying
age groups and yet everyone was impressed with
Lauren and took away something from what she
shared." Marianne Loomis, Yacaipa Christian
Church
"Over
the years I have observed Lauren's
compassionate spirit and willingness to be a light
in someone's time of darkness. As a child she stood
by me as I faced the death of two sons and as
an adult, she took responsibility for the family in
funeral preparations after the sudden death of my
husband, her father. Lauren writes and speaks from
heartfelt experience and has an avid interest in
helping each one of us to help others. We may not
know what to do or say, but Lauren does." Florence Littauer, "Personality Plus," "Silver
Boxes," "Behind the Personality"
