Susan
O'Dooley Smith
Susan
O'Dooley Smith is a writer, editor, public
relations professional, and public speaker whose
work has garnered more than 20 local, regional,
national, an international awards.
A
partner in Shiny Penny Productions, she is working
on her first children's book and is developing
other books with her business partner,
Andy
Landis.
Last year, she was associate producer on two CDs -
Sea of Pink and I Will Rise - both
developed by Shiny Penny Productions.
Smith
also is editor in chief of the national magazine
for individuals grieving the death of a loved one.
Grief Magazine is published quarterly and
features practical, encouraging, and humorous
articles aimed at giving those who grieve the power
to carry on. The magazine is now in its fourth year
of publication.
In
1995, Smith launched out as freelance writer after
15 years as a public relations executive. Clients
included General Electric, Blue Cross Blue Shield,
Humana, Norton Health System, Catholic Health
Initiative, The Oliver Group, Cancer Treatment
Center, and Bandy-Carroll-Hellige
Advertising.
She
also has been a regular contributor of feature
articles to Louisville Magazine and a
contributor to the national publication, Today's
Christian Woman. Her first article for
Today's Christian Woman was included in a
book compilation published by Christianity
Today in 1995.
During
her public relations career, Smith established
herself as a business writer, routinely winning
awards for annual reports, columns, articles and
marketing campaigns. (Notice that she neglects to
write here of her first job, writing press releases
and advertising for a hot rod truck and tractor
show.)
As
director of marketing and community relations for
Caritas Health System she oversaw all marketing for
two hospitals, a home health organization, and
several physician groups, and edited four
critically acclaimed publications. As public
relations director for the Louisville Chamber of
Commerce, she ghostwrote the politically charged
Postscript series of columns for that
organization's president, wrote speeches for CEOs
and public officials, and drafted strategic
economic development proposals. As a writer for the
University of Louisville, she edited two
publications and wrote a well-publicized series of
articles interpreting the esoteric academic
research of university professors for everyday
audiences. During her career, she has written
hundreds of articles and has edited more than 10
publications.
She
also is a compelling and challenging public speaker
whose audiences have ranged from women at church
dinners to women in prison.
Susan
has a bachelor of arts degree in literature and a
master's degree in journalism. She divides her
time, unevenly, among Louisville, Kentucky;
Nashville, Tennessee; and Beechgrove, Tennessee.
(Had she realized living spaces could become so
complicated, she would have paid more attention to
fractions in junior high math.)
Susan's
Speaking Topics
You
Can Be Sure
Do you know, really know, why you believe what
you believe? Do you cringe at the thought of a
skeptic questioning your faith, not sure what to
say? You can be sure of what you believe because
you have good reason to believe it, whether you
know it or not. Susan takes you through the
rational and oh-so-logical foundations of the faith
and, in the process, strengthens yours.
Can
I still Serve If My Plate is Chipped?
You're called to be a priest - a bridge between
God and others - but you feel pathetic and
ineffective. Can you still serve God with all of
your flaws? Join Susan on a journey of finding that
you can serve him not in spite of your
shortcomings, but because of them. After all, some
of the world's greatest meals have been served on
chipped plates.
If
the Shoe Fits
Don't necessarily wear it. Come along with
Susan as she clears out a closet heaped high with
misconceptions about God and her relationship with
him
misconceptions she slips on as easily as
an old pair of shoes. But what fun is it to clean
out a closet if you don't restock it? Join Susan in
trying on - and buying - new shoes, some of which
fit more comfortably than others, some of which
cramp her feet.
How
Does Your Garden Grow?
There are spiritual lessons for life lurking in
your backyard, and Susan's harvested them from
every corner. The weeds have something to say about
paying attention, little red clovers are
well-versed in the power of strong roots, the
azaleas believe in the promise (and pain) of
pruning, and every plant has something to say about
that odiferous natural fertilizer, the manure of
life.
Kids
Really Do Sat the Darndest Things
And, so often, they say them to Susan. This is
a rich, hilarious, and poignant leap into another
world where children will challenge your view of
Jesus (because they see Him as a three-year-old at
Wal-Mart), encourage you to listen for God (because
they know exactly what He sounds like), reassure
you about scary shadows on the wall (because they
know what actually made them), wonder with you
about the end of the world (because it keeps them
awake at night, too), and shock you with what they
would do if they had all the money in the world
(pay God to kill the devil, for
starters).

Andy
and Susan Together
A
Mixed Bag of Fruit - with Plenty of Nuts Tossed
In
Andy and Susan are whipping up a tangy fruit
salad using each of the fruit of the Spirit listed
in Galatians 5. Yum! Be
prepared to taste and see that the Lord is good as
they compare real, everyday fruit to spiritual
fruit and, in the process, uncover the surprisingly
tasty shared characteristics of each. Armed with
plenty of true-life illustrations, they'll give you
a tangible grasp of what the fruit of the spirit
really are and how to nurture them in your life.
(Audience participation is a hilarious must
when these two cooks - or is it kooks concoct a
life-size fruit salad!)
Am
I My Sister's Keeper?
Built around the command to love your God with
all your heart, soul, and mind, and to love your
neighbor as yourself, this presentation takes a
deeper look at what it means to use every piece of
your being in your relationship with God. And it
reveals the truth about loving your neighbor as
yourself. With insight and those trademark stories
from Andy and Susan, you may find that loving
others might be easier, and more fun, than you
think. Includes a startlingly practical and freeing
application of 1 Corinthians 13.
Finding
Joy in the Joyless
Do you hate your job? Do you have fantasies of
overthrowing your boss/ Are you sick of being home
and wish you had a workplace - other than the
laundry room or minivan - to report to? Let Andy
and Susan help you discover the secret of finding
joy in the joyless task no matter where it is. Be
warned, though, Their methods of finding joy may
spark uncontrollable laughter, knee-slapping and
rib-holding. If the joy of the Lord is your
strength, then you're about to get a whole lot
stronger.
Faithful
Friends
There's a reason Jesus sent His disciples out
two-by-two: we need each other. And you may never
find two needier friends than Andy and Susan. Join
them as they openly explore their need for
friendship, fear of friendship, the life-changing
power of friendship, and the New Testament's
undeniable call to love one another fully and
faithfully, with no compromise. Real-life stories
abound as they invite you to peek in on their
friendship (the good, the bad, and the ugly) and
how it has shaped and is shaping them.
Good
Grief
Don't let the title dissuade you. Most of us
are grieving some kind of loss: death, divorce, job
loss, poor health. The good news is that grief is a
journey, and it can take you someplace you want to
be. Andy and Susan are your tour guides on the
rough road of grief, ministering to both your heart
and your head with insight on what grief really is
(it's so simple, you won't believe it), what effect
it has on you (no, you're not going crazy; it's
normal to feel that way), and how you can survive
it (yes, you really can survive it). This is a
presentation filled with hope and tears and humor,
all leading to healing and life.
